The story
It is 11 PM and Jack's wife Claire still has not come home. She mumbles about a company party and tells him not to wait up. Jack says nothing, though he has seen her enter a bar arm-in-arm with another man. Tonight is the eleventh late night this month, and the last chance he intends to give her.
At 4 AM Claire returns and rushes to shower. Her stockings are missing. When Jack mentions Zack, she insists they are only friends and accuses him of jealousy. He asks for a divorce. She smashes a glass, locks herself in the guest room, then shouts that Zack is her best friend and that they had a relationship in the past. She pushes Jack; broken glass pierces his foot.
Claire moves to bandage him, but a drunk Zack calls asking for money. She forgets the wound and hurries out the door, leaving Jack to tend it alone.
Opening
I call her, and she mumbles something about a company party, saying she can't get away.
I don't call her out on it.
I silently watch as my wife of 5 years, whom I've known for 9, enters a bar arm-in-arm with another man.
"I think it'll be a few more hours. Don't wait up for me, go to bed," she says hurriedly before hanging up.
