The story
At the company's year-end dinner, a new intern named Derek snatches the menu from Leo's hands and slaps him with it when Leo tries to order a salmon fillet. Derek boasts that his mother is Evelyn Jonathan, the company's biggest client, and threatens to have Leo's bonus and career destroyed. Leo freezes, because Evelyn Jonathan is his aunt, and she has been single for forty years.
Derek's arrogance has long gone unchecked, and the CEO, Mr. Henderson, sides with him, demanding Leo apologize and pay ten thousand dollars. When Leo questions the claim, a colleague shows him a social media post of Evelyn Jonathan with Derek. Leo's call to his aunt goes unanswered, and the next day his Top Sales Performer title and five-hundred-thousand-dollar bonus are handed to Derek.
As the leaders look away and Derek sneers that justice belongs to the powerful, Leo asks whether Derek has ever met the nephew Evelyn Jonathan dotes on like a son. Derek's confident answer begins to crack, and he turns to Mr. Henderson for help.
Opening
It was the company's year-end dinner, and everyone was allowed to order one favorite dish.
When my turn came, Derek, the new intern, snatched the menu from my hands.
"That's enough. No more orders."
I ignored him and looked at the server. "I'd like a salmon fillet, please."
Derek slammed the menu hard against my cheek.
"I said no more orders!"
A red welt rose on my skin. Heat rushed to my face.
I picked up the menu and slammed it straight back into his.
He shrieked, then roared, "Do you have any idea who I am? My mother is Evelyn Jonathan-this company's biggest client!
