The story
Ethan attends his best friend's mother's funeral and finds his wife Chloe there, standing beside Tyler and greeting guests as if she were his wife. Chloe insists she is only helping Tyler fulfill his dying mother's wish, and Tyler calls it a favor for a friend. Two days earlier, Chloe had claimed an urgent overseas business trip, and Ethan had packed her bags himself.
When Ethan asks Chloe one last time to come home with him, she refuses without hesitation, so he tells her he will have his lawyer draft divorce papers. Later, Chloe returns home with Tyler, who brings seafood fried rice she cooked, and she throws the family cat Cleo to the floor. Tyler claims he is allergic to cat hair, and Chloe fusses over him while Ethan watches in cold silence.
Standing in his own home, Ethan sees his marriage for what it has become and decides he is done.
Opening
I attended my best friend's mother's funeral, only to find my wife there—the same wife who was supposed to be on an overseas business trip.
She was standing by his side, greeting the guests as if she were his wife.
When she saw me, panic flashed across her face. She quickly pulled me to a quiet corner and whispered:
"Tyler’s mom always wanted to see him settled down before she passed. I’m just helping him fulfill her dying wish. Don't overthink it, Ethan."
