The story
Harriet's boyfriend Nathan Bardot leaves for a confidential mission in the northwest, promising three years away. Ten months later he returns without warning and finds her at a prenatal checkup, eight months pregnant. Convinced she has betrayed him, he demands to know whose child she carries and strikes her in front of a gathering crowd.
A stranger steps in to shield her, and Nathan turns his fury on him too. Then his mother Beatrice Bardot arrives with Harriet's report, delighted about the coming grandchild — until Nathan reveals the baby is not his. Beatrice collapses in tears, and the onlookers turn on Harriet, while Nathan grabs her hair and throat.
Harriet insists they were never married, only a couple who never obtained a license, so the child is hers to bear. As Beatrice falls to the floor and Nathan advances again, the crowd's anger begins to waver.

I was about to ask what he meant when he sent me a plane ticket to the northwest.
He explained that the mission was confidential and that he could not be in contact with me during this time.
Ten months passed.
He was supposed to be away, but he came home unexpectedly and caught me at a prenatal checkup.
When he saw my eight-month-pregnant belly, his face turned pale with anger. “I’ve been gone for ten months. How are you pregnant?”
I shrugged and said, “Weren’t you supposed to be gone for three years? Why are you back after just ten months?”
