The story
After a bitter past life in which she forced Liam Hayes into a marriage he never wanted, a military officer wakes to find herself back on the day cross-base transfers are assigned. She marches into Colonel Reynolds' office and volunteers for the remote outpost in Alaska, determined to leave Liam and his first love, Sarah Jenkins, free to be together.
But her choice collides with the life she once built. Liam hands her case files to Sarah, and at a farewell dinner he ignores the ulcer medication she once guarded and downs a drink beside Sarah. To her colleagues she remains the villain who stole Sarah's place at Base Command.
As the deployment roster is finalized, she must decide how much of her old self she is willing to abandon to walk away from the Commander's shadow.
Opening
If he left work through the front doors of the command building, I took the back exit.
When he took his first love out to the movies, I stayed home alone, quietly organizing my case files.
All because in my past life, I forced him to marry me, perfectly aware that his heart belonged to another woman.
But after we married, he left me to sleep in an empty bed for the rest of my life.
We became the most notoriously miserable couple on the military base.
