The story
Born with face blindness, Hazel can only find her way through a crowd by following Jasper, her childhood friend, like a shadow. Yet Jasper makes no secret of his contempt for her, insisting that she pushed him into a river years ago and that her sister Jessica nearly drowned saving him. Hazel is mute; when she tries to type the truth on her phone, he snatches it away and smashes it on the pavement in the city center, abandoning her there as punishment for lying.
Jasper knows better than anyone that she cannot speak. Hours later he returns to find her gone, and surveillance footage shows she mistook another man for him and walked away at his side. At home, her mother scolds her for vanity and envy, while Jasper saves his tenderness for Jessica alone, giving her a necklace and crediting her with the rescue. Watching them, Hazel finally forces out a faint, raspy sound, desperate to tell him who really saved him.
