The story
At the orphanage, Emma Foster and her sister Amelia Pearson wait to be adopted. In their first life, Amelia chose the elegant Charlotte Evans, while Emma was taken by a plainly dressed man who turned out to be the discreet billionaire Henry Foster. Amelia suffered under Charlotte's harsh rule and relentless bullying, while Emma flourished. Consumed by jealousy, Amelia pushed Emma from a tall building.
Emma wakes back on adoption day. This time Amelia clings to Henry, calling him Dad, and Charlotte adopts Emma instead. Outwardly angry, Emma is secretly glad, knowing Charlotte's world is no fairy tale. She endures strict tutoring, horseback riding, archery, piano and dance, and Charlotte slowly softens toward her.
But Charlotte's relatives, led by her niece Olivia Evans, see Emma as a threat to the family fortune and scheme to drive her out, accusing her of stealing a diamond necklace. Emma endures it all in silence, aware that what looks like suffering may be her second chance.
Opening
Ambitious as ever, Amelia instantly sets her sights on the elegantly dressed woman named Charlotte Evans, while I end up being chosen by the man in plain, unremarkable clothes.
But to my surprise, the man turns out to be a discreet billionaire. After adopting me, he publicly announces my identity for everyone to see.
Meanwhile, Amelia is taken in by Charlotte, who's so harsh it borders on cruel. She constantly scolds and punishes her.
