The story
Emrhys and Audrey have been together for seventeen years, ever since Nana took him in as a homeless boy and raised them both. On Audrey's birthday, in a crowded sports bar, Emrhys slides a diamond ring across the table and makes their future a wager: if Team A wins the match, they marry. He never asks what she wants, and his eyes keep drifting to Sasha, a waitress he met only seven days ago.
When a drunk customer threatens Sasha, Emrhys gives away the rare vintage bottle he had saved for Audrey's birthday, then shares Sasha's beer, something the germaphobe never does. He agrees to Sasha's bet that the game will decide who he belongs to. Audrey's phone rings: Nana, whose health is failing, asks whether he proposed, and Audrey cannot tell her the truth.
As the second half begins, Audrey wants Team A to win and dreads it in equal measure.
Opening
Emrhys spent our seventeenth year together celebrating my birthday in a crowded, noisy sports bar, watching a soccer match.
Before kickoff, he slid a diamond engagement ring across the sticky table.
"If Team A wins, we get married."
I froze, staring at him in disbelief.
The referee’s whistle blew.
Without waiting for my answer, and without looking at my face again, he turned his head back to the screens.
