The story
Seven years after Cassie Sterling vanished, the crime boss who claims to have murdered her stands in court and offers a deal: leniency in exchange for the location of her body. He describes her torture in detail, and the courtroom falls silent. Only Detective Ryan Donovan refuses to believe a word, insisting Cassie is not dead but a fugitive who disappeared seven years ago.
Ordered to lead the excavation himself, Ryan drives into the frozen winter hills with Selene Vance at his side. Once his partner and lover, he now shares his life with Selene, the woman he rescued from a drug den and shielded at Cassie's expense. As the shovels strike the hard ground, he is certain nothing lies beneath it.
Then the crowd erupts: they have dug something out. Ryan strides forward to see for himself.
