The story
During a summer job at a mountain wildlife preserve, a ranger's girlfriend blames him when her visiting best friend, Keaton, smuggles fruit into the primate zone and triggers a stampede. Crushed and injured while saving Keaton, the ranger is shoved into a dilapidated guard station so Keaton can be driven to safety. His girlfriend, Kendall, locks the heavy door, cuts his radio signal, and leaves him behind, certain the wolves are too lazy to move and that he is only throwing a jealous fit.
Hank, a veteran night-patrol ranger, reports heavy pack activity near the abandoned outpost, but Kendall orders him south to find Keaton's dropped backpack and dismisses every warning. She does not know the outpost's back window was smashed open a month ago, or that the ranger's hips are dislocated and he cannot fight back.
As the wolves close in, Keaton frets in the armored truck while Kendall soothes him, and a system counts down the ranger's final moments.
Opening
During my summer temp job at the mountain wildlife preserve, my girlfriend’s guy best friend illegally smuggled fruit into the primate zone, triggering an aggressive monkey stampede.
To save him, both of my legs were crushed and severely injured. Yet instead of checking on me, my girlfriend shielded her terrified best friend, turning on me with eyes full of accusation.
"Can’t you see he’s traumatized?" she snapped. "I was just looking out for Keaton while he was visiting!
