The story
Nora Thompson, 37 and pregnant after two years of marriage, finds her home invaded when her mother-in-law moves in with the widow of Jasper's late brother Declan, a divorced mother named Adeline Carter. The older woman soon demands that Jasper father a child with Adeline to continue the family line, and though Jasper refuses and vows that Nora is the only one for him, Nora cannot accept sharing her husband.
Nora begins to notice unsettling things: the nourishing soup Jasper prepares each night leaves her drowsy, and one night she wakes to find him in Adeline's room. There she overhears a plot far darker than she imagined, one that threatens not only her marriage but her unborn child.
Trapped in her own home and unsure whom to trust, Nora must decide how to protect herself and her baby from the people closest to her.
Opening
Ever since I became pregnant, my health hasn't been the best.
Once my mother-in-law found out, she moved into our marital home, under the guise of taking care of me, along with my younger brother-in-law's wife.
Her demeanor changed drastically from her usual kindness, and she started saying absurd things: "My son is the eldest, so he has the duty to support his younger brother and sister-in-law."
"Besides, he's a high achiever, so he should be in charge. Always listening to women won't get him anywhere."
