The story
After a car crash leaves her hearing unnaturally sharp, Carmella can detect the tiny shifts in a heartbeat that reveal true love. She hears it in her best friend Piper's boyfriend when he proposes, and in her brother when his wife survives a plane emergency. But her own boyfriend Julian stays flat, and after three years of marriage his heart still never skips for her.
Then a second crash sends Carmella to the ER where Julian works. He runs past her to his ex-girlfriend Lydia, and his heartbeat roars like a violent ocean. When Lydia says she is getting married, his rhythm seizes and erupts. Julian tears free of Carmella's grip, sending her to the floor, and carries Lydia away.
A nurse stops Carmella with news that she is eight weeks pregnant. Julian never comes home that night, and when he finally returns he is carrying Lydia's medical files, dating back eight years. Told she cannot keep the child, Carmella is left to face what his steady heartbeat has always meant.
