The story
Cassidy is buried in spreadsheets at 2 a.m. when the police call: her best friend Megan is dead in her Seattle condo, ruled a freak accident after slipping on the bathroom floor and drowning in two inches of water. Cassidy knows it is impossible. Megan lived in clinical hyper-vigilance, sleeping in a carbon-fiber helmet and anchoring her bathroom in three layers of industrial non-slip mats.
At the condo, the mats are gone, stripped with chemical remover. Megan's husband Adrian claims she tore them up herself, while her cousin Melanie comforts him. But dried epoxy is trapped under Melanie's fingernails, Megan's helmet and chemical tester have vanished, and Adrian rushes the cremation for tomorrow morning.
Cassidy demands an independent autopsy and takes Megan's effects, recovering a shattered USB drive from a hidden compartment. The password is not fear of death, but being betrayed. Inside waits a single video, timestamped one hour before Megan died.
Opening
The fluorescent lights of the office hummed in the silence of 2 a.m. I was buried under a mountain of spreadsheets when my phone buzzed, the screen illuminating the word "POLICE" in stark, clinical white. My heart did a slow, sickening roll in my chest.
I picked up. The news hit me like a physical blow—my best friend, Megan, was gone.
The detective's voice was detached. He called it a "freak accident."
