The story
At a final dinner before her graduation, Zelda watches her brother Ethan Sawyer, her childhood friend Yohan Harrison and her boyfriend Connor Langley all receive the same rainstorm alert for Lindale, the city where Willow Quinn has been interning. All three rush to help Willow, while Zelda's news of a job offer in Fordham goes unasked about. On moving day, none of them come; they are busy fixing Willow's flooded apartment, and Zelda hauls thirteen boxes down alone, cutting her hand.
When she tells Connor she has checked out of her dorm, he only asks her to store Willow's books. Later, the three men drop everything again when the temperature plunges, and Zelda realises their weather reminders were never meant for her.
Days later, her supervisor Julian Hartley calls: her graduation restoration project has taken moisture damage and must reach the museum lab before ten. With a frame too tall for a cab, she calls Ethan, and his phone buzzes just as the painting is loaded.
Opening
It isn't for our city. It's for Lindale, two hundred miles away.
The next second, my childhood friend, Yohan Harrison, and my boyfriend, Connor Langley, receive the same alert.
All three of them look down at their screens at the exact same time.
Ethan is the first to text Willow Quinn.
"Bring your umbrella."
Yohan immediately checks whether the high-speed train is delayed.
Connor has already opened his ride-hailing app. He plans to go pick Willow up because she's getting off work late.
