The story
When Giselle fails her audition for the National Conservatory of Dance, the family gathers to comfort her, while her twin sister Kayla stands in the corner, hiding an acceptance email of her own. Before she can speak, Kayla's phone rings: a call from herself, ten years in the future, warning that telling their parents the news will drive Giselle to her death and leave Kayla broken and abandoned.
Kayla stays silent, letting her parents believe she failed too. Her mother compares her to Giselle, her father calls another year of dance a waste of money, and a local college brochure is pushed across the table. At dinner, shellfish she is allergic to is placed before her, and a single shrimp sends her to a clinic alone.
Yet beneath the table, Kayla confirms her enrollment at the National Conservatory, three thousand miles away. As her father blocks the door, demanding whether she means to run, she has already decided not to come back.
Opening
The day my twin sister, Giselle, failed her audition for the National Conservatory of Dance, the entire family gathered around to comfort her.
I stood quietly in the corner, staring at the acceptance email glowing on my phone screen.
I wanted to tell my parents that I made it.
But then, my phone buzzed. It was an incoming call from myself, ten years in the future.
