Ten Years Loving the Wrong One

In Ieplad, everyone knows Leopoldo Vece, the Don of the Vece family, loves guns but not women—until Lucia. Ten years into their marriage, her adoptive father Raffaello Conti lies dying of kidney failure, and Leopoldo spares no expense hunting the world for a donor. He finds Elena Granucci, a young, fragile woman, and spends millions solving her every problem to ready her for the transplant. On the day of the surgery, she vanishes.

Lucia rushes to Elena's home and finds her husband holding the woman gently, soothing her. When the call comes that Raffaello has died waiting, Lucia handles the funeral alone. Afterward she calls Marianna D'Andrea, the Don's mother, and agrees to divorce Leopoldo, asking to disappear. The papers are waiting; in one month the decree will be final.

Leopoldo still does not know Raffaello is dead, and he does not know what Lucia saw in Elena's house. When gunfire traps them in the car, he shields Elena and carries her out first, promising to come back for Lucia. He never looks back.
