Ten Years of Wrong Love, I Begged Him to Leave

On Valentine's Day, after finally persuading Cole to take her to a trendy couples' restaurant, Summer's evening collapses when Nadia calls and Cole leaves without a backward glance. She waits until the restaurant closes, then sees Nadia's post online: photos of Cole and Nadia together, the golden pair of their college. At home, a DVD holds Cole's old promise to marry her in ten years — today is their ten-year anniversary. She throws it away and messages him that she is done being sensible, that they should break up.

Packing, she finds she owns only one suitcase of clothes, and the apartment barely holds any trace of her. She gave up a job in Atlanta to follow Cole to Denver, helped him mend his family and build his design studio, and decorated their home alone while he worked. Yet Nadia's casual criticism once reduced her efforts to dust, and Cole never chose her. When he finally replies, it is only to say he is tired and does not want to argue.

With nowhere to go, Summer reaches out to Claire, the college friend who once warned her against Cole, and asks to stay the night.
