The Baby Who Remembered Murder

Toby is five years old, and everyone believes he is a liar. His father has spent years telling teachers, neighbours and relatives that the boy cannot tell fact from fiction, and each time Toby says his father hurts him, the bruises are already gone and his words are dismissed as a child's invention. Only one phrase never changes: the man who hits him is not his real father.

When a government background check brings three investigators into the house, Toby finally has an audience. He tells them the truth, but his father weeps, plays the wounded parent, and shows them an unmarked arm. One silent, silver-haired man lingers at the door, studying Toby as though he were a puzzle.

That night the bathroom door locks from the outside, and a whispered threat follows. Toby remembers warm milk and a white pajama top, and knows the two men are not the same. Thirty-five days have passed since the investigators left.
