The story
When his parents divorce, they agree to send each son fifteen hundred dollars a month. Chase receives his money without fail; Simon receives nothing. When Simon asks, his mother accuses him of hiding a slush fund and his father calls him a broke martyr, so he takes morning classes and works three jobs to survive.
By Thanksgiving his account holds four dollars and twelve cents, yet his family mocks his plea for bus fare in the group chat. Chase gets a plane ticket home from their father; Simon is refused even a loan of seventy-five dollars. Then a photo of Simon clearing tables at a restaurant sets off fresh accusations.
Believed by no one and bleeding from the strain, Simon must prove what his family refuses to see.
Opening
When my parents finalized their divorce, they made a neat, sensible pact: each would deposit seven hundred and fifty dollars into my brother’s account and mine on the first of every month. Fifteen hundred dollars each. Enough to cover rent, groceries, and textbooks without drowning us in student debt.
