The Bride Who Said Goodbye

A week before her wedding, Emily Carter joins her fiancé Ethan and his friends on a camping trip, where tents are drawn by lot. Emily draws the single tent; Ethan draws the same one as Chloe Whitmore, his childhood best friend, and refuses to switch. When her tent leaks in the night, she goes to the car for a towel and overhears Chloe ask whether Ethan would have ended up with Emily if she hadn't left years ago. His hoarse answer, and a retracted group-chat message from his best friend, make clear where she stands.

By morning Emily has quietly cancelled the campsite booking. She stops fetching milk to everyone's taste, stops carrying the cooler bag, and tells Ethan she has a fever after a night in the rain. He calls her precious and shoulders the pack himself, then turns to steady Chloe on the trail. Halfway up, the group passes an old oak, and Emily sees two names carved deep into the trunk: Ethan's and Chloe's.

Emily walks at the back of the group, no longer trying to belong.
