The story

When Carter, a wealthy young man, visits his girlfriend Chloe's mother Eleanor for the first time, he brings a signature orange Hermès gift box. Eleanor, a retired elementary school principal, is delighted—until the box is opened. Inside is no luxury bag, but a skimpy lace bunny maid outfit, sized for a 36D bust, far larger than Chloe's. Carter's texts insist the limited-edition bag is inside, and he blames a mix-up with his friend Mason's shopping.

But Chloe remembers that Mason and his girlfriend Scarlett broke up three months ago in a bitter, public split. Carter's story collapses under that detail, and the too-perfect packaging of the lingerie inside a real Hermès box points to a deliberate gift meant for another woman. Chloe hides her fury from Eleanor, who fears the scandal will ruin their reputation in their quiet suburban town, and plays along with Carter's apology plans.

As Carter promises two replacement bags and a morning visit, Chloe smiles and says nothing—already certain the bunny outfit was never meant for her.

Opening

Eleanor's eyes lit up. She couldn't stop showering him with praises.

But after Carter left, we opened the box. Inside, there was no luxury bag—just a skimpy, three-piece bunny maid outfit.

Eleanor's face flushed with anger. "If you two want to play bedroom games, why on earth did you involve me?!"

My face burned bright red. I couldn't understand why Carter would pull a stunt like this. If he wanted to play dress-up, why didn't he keep it at his place? Why did he have to show it to my mother?
