The story
Gloria Henson's mother has just returned home after surgery for gastric cancer, and her father has brought in a distant relative, Aunt Loretta Lambert, to serve as her caregiver. Devout and vegetarian for decades, Aunt Loretta believes sickness is karma and that Western medicine is killing-sin. She pours the mother's imported targeted medication into the river, throws out the protein powder, sea cucumber, sea bass and beef tenderloin, and serves only plain boiled cabbage, insisting it clears karma and flushes toxins.
Gloria fights back, but her father, Toby Henson, refuses to take sides, telling her to let her mother rest and promising to buy more food tomorrow. Within a week Aunt Loretta has made herself master of the house, pouring out the crucian carp soup Gloria cooks each morning and calling it a life traded for a mouthful. When the neighbor Ruth Chavez steps in to smooth things over, Aunt Loretta pleads her good intentions, and Gloria is left alone to fight for her mother's recovery.
Opening
My distant aunt, the one who prayed and kept a strict devout diet and claimed she saved all living things by setting them free, poured my mother's imported targeted medication straight into the river. Two thousand dollars a box.
She said Western medicine was killing-sin brewed from the lives of living things, and only by tossing it into the river to feed the fish and set them free could she buy my mother a few more days of her ruined life.
