The story
Two years after her death, Riley wakes as a stray kitten, the only survivor of her litter. Her cat mother carries her by the scruff to a familiar door, and Riley looks up at Liam, the ex-boyfriend she left behind, standing there in a towel. His apartment is exactly as she remembers it, down to the furniture she chose herself.
Liam wants to keep her, but says the woman he lives with is afraid of cats. Then a male voice calls him "babe" — and Wes, Riley's old nemesis from the group home, steps into view and calls strays filthy. Riley launches herself at him, claws out, and Liam scoops her up to protect her.
Now Riley is determined to make Liam adopt her, so she can find out when he and Wes began, and whether it started before she died. But Wes wants her gone, and he has made his position clear: it is him or the cat.
Opening
Two years after I died, I reincarnated as a stray cat.
My cat mom carried me by the scruff of my neck to a familiar house. I looked up at the building I knew by heart, then at my ex-boyfriend—and his eight-pack abs—and swallowed a mouthful of kitty drool.
My ex squatted down, scratching my mom’s chin, and muttered to himself, "I really want to adopt it, but she is afraid of cats."
Wow. He moved on that fast?
I widened my kitten eyes and glared at him.
"Babe, what's wrong?"
A familiar male voice drifted out from behind my ex.
Wait a minute. Hold on. His current partner is a guy?
