The story
Ethan Carter has spent thirty years loving Vivian, the daughter of Arthur Mercer, the man his father saved from a collapsed steel press. On their wedding night she threw his bourbon in his face and told him he would never have her, yet he stayed, keeping her coffee warm, working seventy-hour weeks at Mercer Precision Machining, and pouring his youth into her family's legacy until his body gave out. When he opens his eyes again, he is back in their third year of marriage, in the small brick house near the tracks.
This time he has already filed for an uncontested dissolution of marriage at the county courthouse. Fifteen days remain before the decree executes, and Vivian knows nothing of it. She comes home to a warm dinner and his quiet refusals, puzzled by a husband who no longer waits up, no longer follows her to bed, and no longer swallows her casual humiliations. Around them, the plant whispers about Patrick Hayes, her high school sweetheart, and the life Ethan once protected at his own expense.
He has decided not to keep her warm any longer.

My father pulled Arthur Mercer out of a collapsed steel press thirty years ago, taking a beam to his own spine so Arthur could walk away with his life.
Out of gratitude, Arthur handed me the keys to his daughter’s life.
On our wedding night, Vivian took the tumbler of bourbon I handed her and threw it straight into my face. Her eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with furious tears, and her voice cut like a rusted blade.
"You think because your father bled for mine, you own me, Ethan? You might have bought this ring, but you will never, ever have me."
