The story
Adriana Valente has spent ten years bound to Lorenzo Falcone in a union no one witnessed and no Family ever blessed. When their son Matteo, dying of a tumor, asks only for one ordinary day at the seaside with both his parents, she begs Lorenzo on her knees for it. He gives his word, then vanishes the night before, and Matteo dies with the wish unfulfilled. She buries him alone.
Afterward she finds Lorenzo in a photograph on her sister Vittoria's feed, having crossed the water to bring Vittoria snow. She packs her bags to leave. Lorenzo carries Vittoria into the house over a twisted ankle, and Vittoria claims Matteo was only pretending to be sick. Adriana slaps her. Lorenzo takes Vittoria's side, disbelieving his own son's illness, and Adriana walks toward the door.
He never once came home to see the medicine or the charts, and now he catches her hand, offering to take Matteo to the shore next month.

But Lorenzo Falcone didn't love me, and he didn't love our son either.
I begged him for that day, over and over, and in the end he gave his word.
Then he vanished the night before we were meant to go, and my son died with that wish still unfulfilled.
I buried him alone.
