The story
At the company's annual gala, the CEO promises a two-million-dollar bonus to the year's top sales performer. Cassian, whose numbers make him the obvious winner, is congratulated by coworkers while the sneering Brennan Sloane mocks him. When the chairman instead names Lucien Blackwell, the sales director, Cassian realizes every deal his department closed was counted under his supervisor's name.
The next day Lucien calls Cassian in, cuts his year-end bonus to 20,000, and hands his position to Brennan. Cassian discovers his is the only bonus reduced, and that the fifty-million-dollar order he just secured will be credited to the sales manager. With his mother's medical bills weighing on him, he swallows his fury, accepts the transfer, and warns that the company may not get to celebrate its victory after all.
He stops putting in any effort, and the orders begin to slip away.
Opening
At the company's annual gala, the CEO announced that this year's top sales performer would receive a two-million-dollar year-end bonus.
I was the top performer.
However, my manager called me into his office the very next day and explained that the company was cutting costs and improving efficiency. As a result, my bonus had to be reduced.
I initially assumed everyone's bonus was being cut.
Then, I found out I was the only one getting shortchanged.
