The story
Five years after leaving Julian Vance, Avery has built a name for herself in the fashion world and returns to the city where her heart was broken. She buys a prime space for her own bespoke leather-goods studio, determined to live purely for herself, with help from her assistant Mia and photographer Thomas Walker.
But Julian is never far away. At the airport he appears with a little girl named Chloe, who asks Avery why they look so alike. Then a trembling voice calls her at night asking if she is her mommy. And as her opening nears, a photographer and an old metal craftsman both reveal that Julian had been asking about her studio and her materials all along.
Avery thought the past was buried, along with the child she lost and the ring Julian left on the red carpet. Now his shadow seeps past every boundary she drew, and she must decide what he wants and what she will allow.
Opening
At my celebration gala, surrounded by flashing cameras, Julian's face suddenly popped up on my phone in a financial news alert.
Reporters were pressing him about the rumors of his failing marriage to Rebecca Young, an heiress from an elite family. But staring blankly into the lens, Julian gave a completely unrelated answer:
"I once lost the most precious thing in the world."
Someone in the crowd shouted, "Mr. Vance, what was that most precious thing?"
Julian looked straight into the camera. "A ring."
The press erupted into murmurs.
