The story
The day before her graduation party, a girl's older sister, Maya, is raped and murdered in a back alley — and she is trapped in that day forever. When she opens her eyes, she is back in that record-hot summer ten years earlier, standing beside a living, laughing Maya. The clock reads 7:15 PM, and the countdown to death has begun again.
She refuses the shortcut that doomed them, but the masked man finds them anyway, this time in a convenience store, and the fire he starts leaves four dead and her the sole survivor, burned and buried in regret. Then a police officer shows her a photo of the killer and reveals what was found in his room: photos of Maya, and a diary calling her his girlfriend. She is certain her sister never knew him — so why did he choose her?
Opening
The day before her graduation party, my sister was raped and murdered in a back alley.
And I was trapped in that day forever.
Countless times, I thought, "If only I hadn't wanted ice cream," "If only I hadn't taken the shortcut to get home faster..." maybe she would still be alive.
When I opened my eyes again...
I was back in that summer.
That year, it was the hottest summer on record.
The temperature hit 106 degrees.
