The story
A week before her wedding, Charlotte is abducted and tortured for a day and a night while on her way to collect her engagement ring. Her father Chris and her brother Harry abandon a trillion-dollar merger to fly home and keep vigil at her bedside, and Charlotte believes she is loved.
Then she overhears them: the attack was arranged so that Aurora, her half-sister, can marry Marcus of the Sterling family in her place. Chris and Harry plan to let the news of Charlotte's ruined face and reputation spread, so the Sterlings will accept Aurora without anger. They transfer everything in their names to Aurora and dismiss Charlotte's suffering as a little tempering.
Charlotte calls her grandmother Melanie overseas, and when Aurora arrives to gloat over her wedding dresses, Charlotte refuses to call the daughter of a homewrecker her sister.
