The story
For five years, Sam has been the one Felicia Sullivan comes back to. Each time he ends things, she drops to her knees and swears the illegal street racing is over, and each time he sees her bruises and gives in. The money she risks her life for goes to Amos Fox, the bankrupt heir whose family raised her, and the debt she believes she owes him.
On the day their families are meant to settle a wedding date, Felicia never arrives. She has taken the mountain circuit again, and the car has flipped. From the hospital she asks to postpone the wedding and admits she sent their down-payment savings to Amos for a sports car. Sam tells her to do as she likes, then calls his old mentor about a posting at a polar research station, where he cannot come home for at least three years.
Packing to leave, he is met outside by Amos in a new red sports car, who tells him he was never the one Felicia truly wanted. Sam wishes them a long and happy life together and asks Amos to let go of his suitcase.
Opening
I'd broken up with Felicia Sullivan six times, and every single time it came down to Amos Fox.
To keep that bankrupt little heir in spending money, she'd slip off behind my back to run illegal street races, trading her life for cash.
