The Locks That Killed My Babies

Two years ago, Serena lost her first baby at ten weeks, on the same night a small silver padlock appeared on the doorstep. A year later, pregnant again and telling no one, she found an identical lock inside the locked nursery — and lost her second child. Now pregnant a third time, she wakes at seven weeks to find a third silver lock beneath her pillow, in a bedroom no one but her husband Julian could have entered.

Julian calls the lock harmless jewelry and a coincidence, refuses to let her call the police, and insists she is paranoid and needs rest. Serena has spent a year in therapy and watched him dismiss every investigation. When she asks whether he is protecting whoever leaves the locks, and speaks the name Evelyn — his childhood sweetheart, back in the country two weeks before her first pregnancy — his face stiffens before he walks out.

A woman's voice on his phone calls him tenderly by name, and he lies about who she is. Serena must decide how far she will go to protect this baby, and whom she can trust.
