The story
A woman returns to her childhood home for the first time since her daughter Lily was born, three suitcases packed with baby gear and nothing else. Her brother Mike, who collected her from the airport, promptly asks her to send him eighty dollars for gas and tolls. When she refuses, he insists she is married now and belongs to someone else's family, so using the household's resources comes at a price. Her father then opens her luggage and complains that a college-educated woman should know better than to arrive empty-handed.
Opening
My brother, Mike, picked me up from the airport. Back at home, Mom had made my favorite dinner, and Dad was busy hauling my suitcases upstairs. I was basking in the warm glow of a family reunion, the kind of happiness you can only find at home.
Then Mike sidled up to me, rubbing his hands together nervously.
