The story
Maya wakes on the morning her husband Leo's friend Gina brings over a tray of homemade granola bars. In another life, Maya warned Leo about the mold in them, and Gina's mockery ended with a shove that cracked her skull; left untreated while the pair went bar-hopping, she died paralyzed. Now she is back on that same day, and this time she says nothing about the mold.
She watches Gina sprawl over Leo, listens to their talk of bros-only nights and old bets, and swallows her hatred. When they leave for a night of drinking, she is alone with the memory of four numb years, of doctors' warnings, of whispered plans made beside her bed.
Then she checks the date, remembers a radio report about gold prices, and walks out with two changes of clothes and every cent she owns. Gina's call follows her.
Opening
I saw the little green specks of mold in the oat clusters and immediately told my husband not to eat them.
That just made his friend, Gina, roar with laughter.
“God, you’re so high-strung. It’s a granola bar, not poison. Your husband’s eaten way worse. Hell, he’s practically licked my boots clean on a dare before.”
I was so angry I threw the whole tray in the trash. Leo, my husband, thought I’d embarrassed him. He gave me a hard shove.
