The story
Ethan Walker has just posted the highest SAT score in his entire state, a 1580 out of 1600. Yet in front of his stunned family and friends, he announces that he will apply to Seabrook Technical College, an obscure, third-rate vocational school. His mother drops to her knees and begs him not to destroy his future; his father threatens to disown him; his cousin Matilda, his teacher Mr. Hayes, his best friend Ryan Platten, and even his uncle Leonard Flint, a deputy director at the Department of Education, all try to talk him out of it. Easton University and Northbridge University are offering him a full scholarship and a guaranteed graduate spot, but Ethan refuses to explain himself. What none of them know is that if he does not attend Seabrook Technical College, everyone will die in three days. When the high school principal, Arthur Caldwell, makes a phone call to investigate, his expression shifts from anger to shock, and he abruptly withdraws from the matter entirely, leaving everyone more bewildered than before.
Opening
