The story

Ted Smith lost his sight saving Aspen Reid, and she promised to be his eyes forever, teaching him braille and caring for him with tireless devotion. He believed he had found the best love there was — until his best friend, Liam Anderson, returned to the country, and Aspen's hand slipped into Liam's on the mountain trail, leaving Ted to find his own way down.

After a fall on the rocks, Ted learns from Dr. Henry Johnson that his blindness was never permanent: a treatable blood clot, left untreated all this time. As his sight returns, so does the truth — Aspen's tenderness has run alongside a long betrayal, and Liam's life is a gallery of their shared years. Ted slips off his ring and resolves to want her no more.

Yet he keeps his recovered sight hidden, following Aspen to a bouldering gym to see how far her devotion to Liam reaches — and on the wall, the clip at his waist comes loose.

Opening

In saving Aspen Reid, I went blind.

She said she would be my eyes forever and watch all the scenery that I would not be able to enjoy anymore.

She taught me how to read braille and gave me a lot of love.

I thought this was the best love ever.

That was until my best friend, Liam Anderson, returned to the country.

When we were travelling, she held Liam’s hand.

I lost her and immediately called after her, but she said, “Ted, you’ve been blind for three years. Liam said you shouldn’t always rely on me. The hike down isn’t too difficult.
