Part 3They Forgot I Had No Passport

I thought about it for a long time, but no answer came. Eventually, I stopped trying to understand.

When you accumulate enough disappointment, clarity is the only thing left.

I took a deep breath and made a choice.

I went to the vital records office with my lease agreement and the proof of identification I had painstakingly gathered myself. I applied for copies of my birth certificate and social security card, completely decoupling my legal identity from my parents' files.

When the new documents were handed to me, my heart skipped a beat.

There was no mention of Tina. No mention of my parents.

There was only me. Chloe Foster. An independent, separate human being.

That afternoon, I went straight to the passport agency. I had saved enough money from my shifts to pay the expedited fees myself. I stood in line alone, took my photo alone, and paid the fees alone. This time, there were no complications.

Over the next few days, I interviewed with a major corporate firm and landed an entry-level position that matched my degree.

Slowly, the pieces of my life began to click into place. The very air I breathed felt clean, light, and free.

But the peace was shattered a week later when my mother flooded the family group chat with dozens of voice memos.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. The group chat, which had been silent for days, suddenly blew up with activity.

I opened the app to find a barrage of audio files interspersed with photos of Tina. In every picture, my parents stood on either side of her, beaming with pride. They looked like the perfect, happy family of three.

"Aunt Susan, I saw that skincare set you wanted! They have it in stock at the boutique here, so I just swiped my card for you. Don't worry, it's the real deal!"

"Hey Uncle David, I tried some of the local wine here at the vineyard. The vintage is incredible, so I’m bringing back a couple of bottles for us to open when we get back!"

"Hey Aunt Karen, tell little Leo to get ready for some cool toys. I'm hitting the local markets this afternoon to pick up some unique stuff for him."

I heard Tina’s sweet, performative voice chiming in in the background of one of the clips. "Aunt Susan, I actually picked out a beautiful silk scarf for you too! The color is going to look so gorgeous on you."

I scrolled through the entire log. Every single message was warm, lively, and filled with the excitement of their upcoming return. They were displaying their generosity and affection for the entire extended family to see.

Out of more than fifty messages, they had reached out to every single relative. They had remembered everyone.

But there was nothing for me.

Not even a polite, superficial mention. No one had tagged me to ask, "Chloe, is there anything you want us to bring back?"

As I stared at the screen, a private message popped up from my cousin, who was blissfully unaware of the situation.

"Hey Chloe, I notice you aren't in any of the photos Aunt Sarah is posting. Didn't you go on the trip with them?"

I typed back a brief, calm reply.

"No, I stayed back."

My cousin sent a rapid-fire string of question marks.

"What? Why? The whole family went. How did they leave you behind? That is so incredibly unfair. You're their daughter too, why do they treat you like an afterthought?"

I didn't reply to her questions.

Two years ago, this kind of pity would have made me sob. One year ago, it would have kept me awake all night, staring at the ceiling in misery.

But now, my heart was perfectly still.

I backed out of the private chat, scrolled to the family group, and quietly clicked "Leave Group". Then, I blocked and deleted the contact cards for my cousin, my aunts, and my uncles.

The silence that followed was absolute. It was beautiful.
