Five years after her divorce, Alice is lured back to Minnesota by a message from her ex-husband Johnson claiming their son misses her. Instead, she walks into a trap: Johnson's new wife Marta has demanded her return as punishment, and the household sets out to humiliate her. Johnson, who knows she is allergic to seafood, orders her to peel a basin of shrimp with bare hands, while the son she gave birth to calls her nothing but a nanny.

When Alice reveals she is already married and shows the diamond ring on her finger, Johnson and Marta mock her as a liar and a cast-off, and Johnson tears the ring away. He threatens to dig up her mother's grave if she refuses to obey, and a bodyguard destroys her phone so she cannot call for help. She endures the abuse, clinging to the knowledge that her husband Alex will arrive in Minnesota in two days to take her home.

But Marta's cruelty escalates, and at the racetrack she proposes dragging Alice behind a car for entertainment, leaving Johnson to weigh how far he will let his new wife go.
