The story
Six years after leaving Ashford, Sara Simmons runs into Brett Delgado in an airport nursing room, where he is mixing formula for a little girl. He claims he vanished to go undercover, that the child is an informant's orphan, and that he always meant to return for her. Then Elisa Fox, her stepsister, walks in wearing a diamond necklace, and Brett shields her, calling her a key witness he had to keep close.
Sara has spent those years caring for Brett's paralyzed father, Julian, who confessed before dying that Brett had taken Elisa south long ago. She settles every account, tells Brett never to contact her again, and boards a one-way flight to Riverton.
Brett tracks her down at the flower shop where she now works, asking her to sign over his father's old house. She agrees, and he promises to marry her once his work is finished.

Six years after I left Ashford, I ran into Brett Delgado in the airport nursing room.
He was mixing formula for a little girl, his hands far more practiced than they used to be.
We looked at each other for a few seconds before he spoke first. "Long time no see."
I smiled too. "Long time no see."
Six years ago he'd said he was going to meet an informant to gather evidence, and he never came back.
Everyone told me to accept it, said I was too stubborn, that I was the reason he'd been pushed somewhere dangerous.
