The story
Every Thanksgiving, Salvatore brings a showgirl home from one of his clubs and makes his wife, Francesca, kneel and serve them drinks. This year he brings Carmela and orders Francesca to hand over her heirloom diamond ring, her grandmother's pearl earrings and the silk choker at her throat, while every member of the Genovese family watches and waits for her humiliation. This time Francesca asks for a divorce, and the room erupts in laughter and bets on how quickly she will beg for forgiveness.
Salvatore offers her five million in cash if she walks out the door, then threatens to strip her of everything he paid for, reminding her that her father went bankrupt and that her mother drugged them both to force the marriage. He has never believed she was a victim too, and for eight years she has served him and the other women he keeps on the second floor.
When a call comes that her mother has been shot and is in surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital, Francesca begs Salvatore on her knees to take her there, terrified he will refuse out of spite.
Opening
He makes me kneel and serve them drinks. A lesson, he calls it, in how to please a man.
This was the eighth Thanksgiving, and this time, he brought back a girl poured into a tight leather dress.
"She doesn't have any decent jewelry," Salvatore announced. "Give her your heirloom diamond ring. Your grandmother's pearl earrings, too.
