When Love Runs Out of Coupons

Zara made a stack of wish coupons by hand during her first year of marriage to Ethan, each one promising that he would unconditionally grant her a single wish. He said he would save them and cash them in slowly when they were old. Now the box in his study is empty, because he gave the last coupon to Blair, telling her to ask for anything she wanted. Zara watched him do it from outside a hospital room, having just lost their second child alone.

At home, Blair sits on Zara's sofa in Zara's silk bathrobe while Ethan pours her water, and when Zara objects, he stands protectively in front of Blair and says they can have another child. He leaves that night to take Blair to the hospital, and does not come home. Zara's anniversary dinner, promised a week earlier, is still waiting when his message arrives.
