The story
A wife's world collapses when her husband's assistant, Becca Summers, calls to say he has drowned while fishing. Rushing to the spot in panic, she falls, loses consciousness, and wakes to learn her baby is gone. At the water's edge she finds Frank Hansen alive in Becca's arms, the drowning nothing but a cruel game. When she demands a divorce, he refuses, insisting she must first bear him a child. His cold indifference, even as she is pulled from the pond and hospitalized, leaves her utterly alone.
Returning home to pack, she is met with memories of five wasted years and a nursery prepared for a baby who will never come. Frank comes back exhausted, orders her to clean his fishing gear, and dismisses her grief as an overreaction. He offers a gift for the baby, but the clothes are meant for a dog, tied to Becca's poodle. As rain falls, she signs the divorce papers and walks away from the house of betrayal, her heart breaking.
Opening
In my panic and hurried state, I tripped over some fishing bait, fell down and fainted.
When I regained consciousness, my baby had gone. The doctor told me that he could not find the gestational sac anywhere and suggested I go back to the place where I fell to look for it.
Despite my grief, I force myself to the fishing spot only to see my husband's assistant acting coquettishly in my husband's arms.
"Mr. Hanson, Tanya Sayers did not come in the end and make you lose a dare! If you get a fish, you have to give it to me."
