The story
Jasper Lockwood has spent his life in the shadow of his brother Cyrus, whose severe claustrophobia has made him the centre of the family's world. When college applications arrive, his parents direct him to a local special education program so he can keep caring for Cyrus, and his girlfriend Maya Simmons gives up her own plans to stay behind and look after him. Only Jasper's dream of Noveria Engineering University is treated as expendable.
Determined to pay his own way, Jasper takes gruelling day labour at a building materials market, hiding his burns, calluses and savings from a family that will not help him. Then a delivery sends him to Maya's apartment, where Cyrus is waiting, and the life he has been quietly building for himself collides with the one they chose for him.
Opening
When it came time to fill out our college applications, my family focused all their attention on my brother, who suffered from severe claustrophobia.
My mother pored over the dorm room sizes at several universities in our city.
"Let's just stay local," she said. "It's closer to home, and it'll be easier to take care of Cyrus."
