The story
In a sweltering Georgia July, five-year-old Toby wakes in his aunt's apartment to find himself living the summer he remembers only as grief: the repairman's visit, the bruises, the funerals, the anniversaries at the cemetery. This time, when the doorbell rings, he clings to Aunt Sarah and begs her not to let the man in.
Sarah humors him at first, then grows uneasy. The caller knows she has a child, though she never mentioned one. When the power dies and the doorbell rings again, his helpful voice answers a call she never made. She bolts the door and dials for help, but Toby knows the reports said the man never came through the front door.
A gloved hand grips the kitchen window latch, and the man in the blue work shirt climbs inside.
Opening
1
The year I turned five, my Aunt Sarah called a repairman to fix the air conditioning. While he worked, I was supposed to be napping.
When I woke up, the living room was crawling with police. Sarah was huddled on the sofa, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket, her skin a map of violet bruises and her eyes two empty craters.
