The story
Naomi is an infectious disease doctor who has built a quiet life with her husband, Ted, in a home she bought herself. But her brother, Travis, lives like a feral animal, dragging a different woman home every few days, mocking Ted, and treating her house as his private hotel. When Naomi finally orders him out, Travis grabs her by the hair and slams her against the wall. Ted does not shield her; he calls it a family matter and pleads with her not to involve the police.
Naomi places a postnuptial agreement on the table: infidelity by either party ends the marriage, and the at-fault spouse leaves with nothing. Ted signs it, laughing at her paranoia. Then Travis sends him a photo of a woman he has found, inviting Ted to join him. Naomi already knows the woman is a patient admitted to her clinic that afternoon, with catastrophic lab results.
As Ted reaches for his jacket and claims the men from the firm want to watch a game, Naomi tells him to go ahead and have fun. She has stopped arguing. She has stopped yelling.
Opening
My husband and I had just slipped beneath the sheets, the quiet rhythm of the evening settling over us, when the bedroom door was kicked open.
My brother, Travis, stumbled into the room. Wrapped around his waist was a girl who couldn't have been older than twenty, plastered in crude stick-and-poke tattoos and reeking of stale tobacco and cheap vanilla mist.
"Jesus, Ted," Travis drawled, leaning against our doorframe with a smirk.
