The story
For seven years, Conrad has loved Quinn Summers across the miles, sending her half his salary each month and believing her stories of a cramped rental studio and a job that never rewarded her. When he quits his job and travels more than six hundred miles to Oceanton to surprise her with a proposal, the receptionists at her company mistake him for a kept man and whisper about Mr. Gomez.
Hector Gomez, head of the Gomez family, greets him warmly as the husband of the pregnant Ms. Summers. Quinn herself arrives, freezes at the sight of Conrad, and dismisses him to her assistant as a classmate she barely knows. In the villa where he is locked away, wedding photos, men's shirts and a prenatal report confirm what she has hidden.
Ten years together, seven of them apart, and a journey of more than six hundred miles end in a single cold message telling him not to embarrass himself.
Opening
I only wanted to surprise her and ask her to marry me.
When the receptionist heard I was looking for Quinn, her expression slightly shifted. "Our CEO Ms. Summers is still in a meeting. Please wait a moment."
I was surprised. Quinn had never told me she had been promoted.
During our video call last week, she had even complained about how stressful work was and how far away a promotion felt.
