The story
After Leo Carter's older brother is killed in a shoot-out, the position of the don falls to Leo. His mother urges him to marry his late brother's pregnant widow, Ariel Sullivan, but Leo refuses, swearing that Fawn is his life and that he would rather give up the inheritance than betray his wife.
Then Fawn overhears the truth: the child in Ariel's womb is Leo's own, arranged by his mother, who secretly drugged him. Leo insists the baby will be passed off as his brother's posthumous heir and that Fawn must never learn the truth, because she cannot bear children and would leave him. Fawn, holding a pregnancy test of her own, decides to go.
She calls Mr. Will Harmon, her late father's loyal secretary, and asks him to erase all traces of her within three days, returning to the Jossa family. Leo, unaware, plans a cruise for the two of them and dismisses the idea of children. When Ariel collapses in the doorway, Leo rushes to her, leaving Fawn on the ground.
Opening
After Leo Carter’s older brother passed away, his mother proposed that he marry his late brother’s pregnant wife, Ariel Sullivan.
Leo refused.
“Fawn is my life,” he said coldly. “I’d rather give up inheriting my brother’s position as the don than ever betray my wife.”
I was deeply moved by his devotion. That was until I accidentally overheard a conversation between Leo and his mother.
“The child in Ariel’s womb is clearly yours,” his mother said sharply. “So why won’t you marry her?”
Leo exhaled a cloud of smoke. His gaze drifted somewhere far away, unreadable.
