The story
For ten years of marriage, a wife believed her life with Sean Whitmore was secure. Then his first love, Sonia Sutton, lost her husband, and Sean handed over divorce papers, choosing to raise Sonia's two children as his own. The wife took her daughter Wendy and left, never remarrying for fear a stepfather might mistreat her. She raised Wendy alone, watched her marry Aidan Anderson, and doted on her granddaughter Chloe.
On her sixtieth birthday, Wendy and Aidan claim sudden work emergencies and cancel the celebration. Resting at home, the wife stumbles on a local video filmed that evening: Wendy, Aidan and Chloe gathered in a hotel dining room with Sean and Sonia's grown children, singing to Sonia, whose birthday falls on the same day. Wendy hugs Sonia and calls her "Mommy Sonia."
Alone with a small cake she ordered for herself, the wife faces the question she cannot answer: how could the daughter she sacrificed everything for embrace the woman who tore their family apart?
Opening
In our tenth year of marriage, Sean Whitmore cheated on me with Sonia Sutton.
He brought his Sonia’ son and daughter to see me.
He said he felt sorry for the children. They needed a father.
Our daughter begged him to stay, but he refused to change his mind.
I didn’t fight to keep him. I took our daughter and left, and I never remarried for fear that a stepfather might mistreat her.
Years later, my daughter married a good man.
My granddaughter was adorable too. I spent my days caring for her, and life was happy and peaceful.
