The story
A year after a fatal mix-up sent her best friend and the friend's daughter into the wrong car, a wife is blamed for their deaths. Her husband carries the guilt, so she suggests a mountain trip to clear their heads. When a mudslide strikes, he grabs the two urns and runs, leaving her and their daughter at the mouth of the ravine.
She calls him ninety-nine times; he hangs up each time. Caleb, captain of the search-and-rescue team, keeps his crew circling the valley's outskirts. Then Vanessa — the friend who supposedly died a year ago — arrives with the wife's parents, and the three of them admit the deaths were faked to punish her jealousy.
Trapped ten days without water, her daughter grows weaker. When a rescuer hears knocking from the rocks, Vanessa twists her ankle and Caleb orders the team to withdraw, insisting the sound was only falling stone.
Opening
A year ago, I forced my husband to rush our daughter to the hospital after she had an allergic reaction. That decision led to my best friend, a single mother, and her daughter getting into the wrong car — and losing their lives.
My husband has carried that guilt with him ever since.
Over the Labor Day weekend, I suggested taking a trip to a nearby mountain resort to clear our heads.
But when the mudslide came, he grabbed my best friend's and her daughter's urns and ran away…
