The story
Emma, the only daughter of a middle-class family with three houses, has never had a room of her own. Since her grandfather died when she was six, her grandmother has shared her bedroom in the family's two-bedroom apartment, and every protest she has made since childhood has been laughed off or brushed aside.
On her eighteenth birthday, Emma wishes aloud in front of all the relatives for a small room of her own, exposing the family's private arrangement. Her father slaps her, her grandmother weeps, and the celebration collapses. Fleeing the restaurant, Emma sits on a bridge until police sirens and her parents' desperate shouts reveal that they had already decided to buy a new house.
Relieved, Emma lets them believe the worst was a misunderstanding, and the family goes house hunting the next day. Yet the new development they visit is selling out fast, and her grandmother's belongings still fill the room they share.
