The story
On their wedding anniversary, Sienna blindfolds her husband, Mason Najimy, and leaves him in a remote stretch of the American West. From a loudspeaker overhead, she tells him to call a cab himself, punishing him for the day he told her assistant, Kyle Finch, to take a cab home in 113-degree heat. Kyle walked back, collapsed, and spent a day in intensive care, and Sienna has held onto it ever since.
Stranded, Mason refuses to kneel and apologize to Kyle, who stands beside Sienna wearing designer clothes on a hundred-thousand-dollar monthly salary while Mason lives on five thousand. As darkness falls and wolves close in on the hillside, Sienna watches from the plane, offering no rescue ladder, calling it a lesson he owes Kyle.
Mason tells her she need not take him back, and the pack begins to charge.
Opening
A plane roared overhead, and her cold voice echoed from a loudspeaker: “Mason Najimy, you said adults should know how to call a cab. Try calling one now.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. To get back at me over her assistant, she’d actually left me here. Maybe this marriage ended long ago.
I quietly took out my GPS satellite phone. “Come pick me up,” I said calmly.
